At least 16 people, including women and children, were killed and several others injured after a gas cylinder explosion struck Karachi, Pakistan, in the early hours of Thursday. The incident occurred in the city’s Soldier Bazaar area.

Seven of the victims were children, including a two-year-old. Rescue teams recovered 16 bodies from the debris and pulled out 14 injured individuals; one of the injured was later discharged after receiving treatment.

The blast was reported between 4:00 and 4:15 am on the first floor of a multi-storey residential building in Gul Rana Colony near Street No. 05, close to Aga Khan School. Families were reportedly preparing sehri, the pre-dawn Ramadan meal, when the explosion occurred.

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari expressed profound sorrow over the loss of life and instructed authorities to provide the best possible medical treatment to those injured, Dawn reported.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also conveyed his condolences and directed officials to accelerate rescue operations and safely evacuate anyone trapped beneath the rubble. He further ordered the Karachi Commissioner’s Office to carry out a comprehensive probe into the cause of the blast.
