Karachi Gul Plaza Fire: 26 dead, dozens missing
Gul Plaza fire tragedy has shook the nation as the official death toll continues to rise and many are still missing.
The fire was extinguished after more than 33 hours on January 19 prompting rescuers and locals to comb through the debris and enter the dilapidated building located on M.A. Jinnah road.
The search for missing people is still going on as the authorities find their way inside the collapsed structure which once housed 1200 shops.
The tragedy has united the city at the front as locals flocked to the site to provide relief and food boxed to the crew.
Videos also emerged of volunteer men present at the location helping people escape the fire from windows.
In a newly emerged video, the interior of the building can be seen clouded with smoke during the initial moments of the fire on Saturday.
According to the official report released by the Chief Fire Officer of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the fire began at night and the first report was received at 10:26 PM.
In the report it has been mentioned that the first fire tender was dispatched from the Central Fire Station and Saddar Fire Station which “reached within minutes”.
In a press conference earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced a compensation of Rs10 million each for the families who lost a member in the inferno.
CM also added that the current building will be demolished due to the extent of the damage and a new one will be rebuilt.
