Karan Johar Defends Alia Bhatt Amid Alpha Trolling, Says Her Stardom and Talent Speak for Themselves

Filmmaker Karan Johar has come out in strong support of Alia Bhatt after the actor faced intense trolling surrounding the release of her action thriller Alpha. Calling the criticism unnecessary, Johar praised Alia’s acting ability, star power and box office pull, urging detractors to “please relax” instead of dismissing her achievements.

Taking to Instagram after watching Alpha, Karan shared an emotional note celebrating Alia’s performance in the YRF Spy Universe film. He described the actor as someone whose talent is “unquestionable” and whose journey over the years has established her as one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars. According to him, Alia’s success is the result of consistent hard work rather than the labels often attached to her online.

The filmmaker also addressed the criticism directed at the actor in recent days. Without naming individual trolls, Karan said he was surprised by the negativity surrounding Alpha and appealed to people to stop undermining Alia’s accomplishments. He wrote that the actor possesses both “stardom and theatrical pull,” adding that audiences have repeatedly demonstrated their willingness to watch her films in cinemas. He urged critics to acknowledge that reality instead of reducing every conversation about her to debates over nepotism.

Johar further praised Alia for taking creative risks and constantly challenging herself with different kinds of roles. He said she has built a filmography that balances commercial entertainers with critically acclaimed performances, proving her versatility as an actor. According to him, Alpha represents another significant milestone in her career as she ventures into the action genre on a much larger scale.

His post comes after Alpha became the subject of heated online discussion following its release. While many viewers appreciated the film’s action sequences and Alia’s performance, others questioned her suitability as an action lead, with some social media users reviving the long-running nepotism debate. The trolling intensified during the film’s promotional campaign, with several clips and interviews involving Alia drawing mixed reactions online.

Karan has long been vocal about his admiration for Alia, whom he introduced to Bollywood with Student of the Year in 2012. Over the years, the two have collaborated on multiple successful projects, and Johar has often described her as one of the finest actors of her generation. Because of their close professional relationship, he has frequently defended her whenever she becomes the target of online criticism.

Directed by Shiv Rawail, Alpha marks the first female-led film in Yash Raj Films’ Spy Universe. The film stars Alia alongside Sharvari, with Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor and R. Madhavan playing pivotal roles. Months of physical training and action choreography went into preparing Alia and Sharvari for their demanding roles, making the film one of the most ambitious action projects fronted by female leads in Hindi cinema.
