Karan Johar promises a sharper, more engaging Koffee with Karan for 2026

Two decades after Karan Johar first invited Bollywood’s biggest stars to spill the tea on his signature couch, the filmmaker appears ready to brew another piping-hot season of Koffee with Karan. According to industry insiders, the newly unified streaming giant JioHotstar is in preliminary discussions with Johar for the show’s ninth instalment, with a potential premiere eyed for the end of 2026.

The buzz comes at a pivotal moment. JioHotstar — born from the February 2025 merger of Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema under the JioStar joint venture — is aggressively consolidating premium entertainment under one roof. With access to a massive library of Indian and international content and a claimed user base exceeding 500 million, the platform is now strategically courting tentpole originals to retain its hold on the streaming wars. Koffee with Karan, long a viral goldmine for clip-worthy gossip and rapid-fire revelations, fits perfectly into that playbook.

A source close to the platform told Mid-Day that while the deal is far from locked, both sides are aligned on evolving the format to suit today’s shorter-attention-span audience. “Karan is aware that the audience has changed,” the source said. “So he may shorten the segments and make them more current. The guest list too will change — with cross-industry pairings, South stars, OTT actors, and creators showing up on the couch.” The emphasis, insiders suggest, will be on delivering “repeat value” across social media clips while keeping the legendary banter intact.

This isn’t the first time fans have been teased about Season 9. Back in mid-2024, Johar himself confirmed the show’s return during interviews, even joking that Season 8 had felt a tad “boring” and promising a sharper, more candid Season 9 for 2025. A year later, in April 2025, he reiterated that the ninth season was “in the works.” Yet production timelines appear to have shifted — possibly delayed by the massive backend integration following the JioHotstar merger. The current round of talks signals renewed momentum, with the platform now taking the lead after previous seasons streamed on Disney+ Hotstar (Seasons 7 and 8).

For Johar, the timing couldn’t be more symbolic. The show turns 22 this year, having launched on Star World in 2004 and evolved into a cultural phenomenon that launched a thousand memes, controversies, and career-defining moments. From SRK’s couch confessions to Alia-Ranbir’s pre-wedding revelations, Koffee with Karan has always been more than just a talk show — it’s appointment television (or streaming) that doubles as water-cooler conversation across the country.

Social media is already alight with anticipation. Fan pages and Instagram reels are flooded with calls for dream guests — Kareena Kapoor Khan (still waiting for her solo hot seat, many insist), fresh South Indian pairings, and even digital creators who have never stepped onto the Koffee couch before. The show’s ability to generate headlines long after episodes drop remains its biggest strength.

Of course, nothing is official yet. The discussions are described as early-stage, and both Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment and JioHotstar are keeping details tightly under wraps. But if the stars align — quite literally — audiences could be sipping fresh Koffee before 2026 rings out.

Until then, the couch stays warm, the rapid-fire questions stay loaded, and Bollywood’s most glamorous secrets remain just one season away from being served steaming hot.
