Karan Johar’s big bet on ‘Ramayana’, distribution deal worth Rs 259 crore finalized
24The audience is eagerly waiting for Ranbir Kapoor’s much awaited film ‘Ramayana’. The first part of the film will be released in theaters this Diwali. According to media reports, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, along with producers Namit Malhotra and Yash, has bought the theatrical distribution rights of ‘Ramayana’ in India for Rs 250 crore.
What information came to light?
According to a report in Variety India, co-producers Namit Malhotra’s DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations have finalized the deal with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions after several rounds of talks. According to reports, the talks started at around Rs 500 crore, but the deal for distribution of the film across India was concluded for Rs 250 crore.
The report states that Malhotra had shown approximately 30 minutes of edited footage of the film to potential distributors before the deal was finalized.

The deal is another major acquisition for Dharma Productions, which over the years has distributed several high-profile pan-India blockbusters like SS Rajamouli’s ‘Baahubali’, Rana Daggubati’s ‘The Ghazi Attack’, Shankar’s ‘2.0’ and Jr NTR’s ‘Devra: Part 1’. The production house also got a significant financial boost in 2024 when Aadar Poonawala’s Serum Institute of India acquired 50 per cent stake in the company for Rs 1,000 crore.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayan stars Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. The cast also includes Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Ravi Dubey as Laxman, Arun Govil as Dasharatha, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari, Vivek Oberoi as Vidyutjiva and Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha.
