Himanta’s stronghold shook with bloody conflict! 8 people injured in Karbi Anglong violence, internet shut down

Assam Violence: Violence broke out again in Assam’s restive Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday when two groups of protesters clashed. After this the police had to use lathi charge and tear gas to disperse them. At least eight people were injured in this new violence. Following the clashes and violence, the state government temporarily suspended internet services in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts.

Officials said that this step has been taken to maintain peace and stability in the area. Assam DGP Harmeet Singh said that the government is talking to the protesters. A date has been fixed for further talks. He said that shops have been burnt and 48 policemen have been injured so far.

Why did violence erupt on Tuesday?

According to officials, a large number of people, including women and children, took to the streets to protest against the violence in the Kheroni market area, whose shops were burnt by the mob on Monday despite prohibitory orders being imposed. He said that protesters demanding removal of encroachers from the tribal area had also gathered on the roads of Kheroni Bazaar area.

Stone pelting on police and media

A senior police officer said there was huge tension between the two groups, and security forces deployed in the area were trying to pacify them. He said that suddenly, people from both the groups started throwing stones at each other, due to which many protesters, policemen and media persons were injured.

Police fired tear gas shells

When the situation went out of control, the police had to resort to lathi charge and tear gas shells to disperse the protesters from both groups. He said the situation in the area is tense, and additional forces have been deployed. Earlier, protesters had set fire to two motorcycles in Kheroni area.

What did CM say on the new violence?

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters on the sidelines of a program in Guwahati that the situation in Karbi Anglong is very sensitive. Senior minister Ranoj is present in Pegu district. I am confident that the matter will be resolved soon. Earlier on Tuesday, the protesters ended their hunger strike following talks with Pegu following their demand for removal of encroachers from tribal areas.

The protesters belonging to different political parties and social organizations were on hunger strike for 15 days. They were demanding eviction of illegal encroachers from Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) lands in Karbi Anglong and neighboring West Karbi Anglong districts. Pegu spoke to the protesters and assured them that the government would soon hold three-way talks on the issue, after which they ended their hunger strike. Pegu said that the Chief Minister will also take part in the talks.
