Karnataka: Keys lost on counting day, strongroom opened with hammer and chisel

Counting day is usually very busy and sensitive, but this time in Karnataka it started with an unexpected incident. Early in the morning, when the officials were getting ready to count the votes, the news of the keys of the EVM strongroom going missing came to light. This incident threw the entire administration into a panic and the counting process got delayed.

The situation became so serious that a person had to try to break the locks with a hammer and chisel. An attempt was made to reach the strongroom in the presence of security personnel, because the votes related to Davangere South by-election were kept safe in this room.

By-election had to be held on Davangere South seat because former MLA Shamanur Shivashankarappa had passed away. Along with this, by-elections were also held on Bagalkot seat, the counting of votes is being done today. The results of both the seats may not directly affect the government’s position, but politically their importance is very high.

Prestige battle between Congress and BJP

These by-elections are being considered a question of prestige for both Congress and BJP. While Congress is trying to save both its seats, BJP aims to shock the ruling party by winning these seats. Especially at a time when there are talks of tussle over leadership within the Congress.

Voting percentage and strategy

According to the Election Commission, around 68.74 percent voting took place in Bagalkot and around 68.43 percent voting took place in Davangere South. These figures show that voters showed good participation in these by-elections. BJP wants to fill new energy in its workers through these elections, so that the organization can be strengthened before the 2028 assembly elections. On the other hand, it is important for Congress to save these seats, because defeat can be linked to the government’s performance.

Candidates and internal disputes

On Davangere South seat, Congress gave ticket to Samarth, grandson of the late MLA. His hold and sympathy in the area were considered important behind this decision. However, after the elections, differences within the party also emerged. Congress took action against some leaders who were accused of trying to defeat the party candidate. This matter also exposed the internal situation of the party.

eyes fixed on leaders

The name of State Housing Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan is also in discussion in this entire incident. There is speculation that action may be taken against him during the cabinet reshuffle in the future. In such a situation, the election result of Davangere South is considered important for them also.

If we talk about the previous elections, in 2023, Shamanur Shivashankarappa defeated BJP candidate BG Ajay Kumar by 27,888 votes from Davanagere South seat. This time too, everyone’s eyes are fixed on this seat, because the result here is believed to give a political message.
