Karnataka’s ‘drama’ escalates, Siddaramaiah and Shivkumar clash over ‘words’
The tussle going on between CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar over the post of Chief Minister in the Congress government of Karnataka has now come to the fore. There has been a tussle between the two regarding the post of CM for several weeks. But on Thursday, both of them had a heated exchange on social media regarding the ‘power of words’. In the social media post, both are emphasizing on the ‘value of the word’.
Meetings are being held from Bengaluru to Delhi on the ongoing tussle between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. Siddaramaiah has made it clear that he will remain the CM for 5 years. So Shivkumar had recently started the song of ‘Secret Deal’.
Till now both of them were calling themselves the commanders of the Congress and saying that whatever decision the high command takes will be accepted. But now both have started openly attacking each other.
This tussle between the two has come to the fore at a time when Siddaramaiah’s government has completed two and a half years on 20th November. It is being said that after the formation of the Congress government in May 2023, a power sharing deal was made, in which it was decided that Siddaramaiah would be the CM for two and a half years and after that Shivkumar would be the CM for two and a half years. The ‘secret deal’ that Shivkumar had mentioned a few days ago is being linked to this alleged power sharing deal.

What did Shivkumar say now?
For the first time, Shivakumar has spoken openly in a social media post on the ongoing tussle with Siddaramaiah. In a post on Thursday, he wrote, ‘Sticking to one’s words is the greatest strength in the world.’
He further wrote, ‘The power of words is the power of the world. Be it a judge or the President or anyone else, including me, we all have to live up to what we say. The power of your words is the power of the world.
This post of Shivkumar is being linked to the issue of ‘secret deal’. He had recently said, ‘I have not asked to be made the Chief Minister. This is a ‘secret deal’ between 5-6 of us. I don’t want to say anything publicly on this. I trust my conscience. We should work with our conscience. I do not want to embarrass the party in any way and weaken it. If there is a party, we are there. If there are workers then we are there.

Siddaramaiah also retaliated
Shivkumar posted it at 8:21 am. About 10 hours later, at 6:39 pm, Siddaramaiah also made a post. In this, Siddaramaiah also used the same kind of language as Shivakumar had used. In the post, Siddaramaiah also kept a list of the works which he would complete in his remaining tenure.
Siddaramaiah wrote in his post, ‘The mandate given by the people of Karnataka is not for a moment, but a responsibility which lasts for 5 years.’
He further wrote, ‘No word has any power unless it makes the world better for people. Our words for Karnataka are not just a slogan, but it means the world to us.
Siddaramaiah claimed in the post that when he was the chief minister between 2013 and 2018, he had fulfilled 157 out of 165 promises. He wrote, ‘In this tenure, 243+ promises out of 593 have already been fulfilled and every remaining promise will be fulfilled with commitment and trust.’

2.5 year old formula becomes a problem!
The reason for the tension between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar is the ‘2.5 year formula’. This formula has become the cause of internal strife in Congress.
Before Karnataka, Congress has also had to face tussle in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh due to this alleged formula. Due to the tussle in these two states, Congress had to lose its power. In Madhya Pradesh, Jyotiraditya Scindia had changed sides and joined BJP. At the same time, in Chhattisgarh, where Congress came to power with an overwhelming majority in 2018, it had to face a major defeat in the 2023 elections.
Now there is a tussle going on between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. Pro-Shivkumar MLAs are repeatedly reaching Delhi and putting pressure on the high command to make Shivkumar the Chief Minister.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had recently met with Siddaramaiah and then Shivakumar in Bengaluru. Kharge says that only the high command will take the decision regarding Karnataka.
