UK PM Keir Starmer Resignation: United Kingdom Prime Minister and Labor Party leader Keir Starmer has suddenly announced his resignation from the country’s top political post. After his unexpected decision, discussions have intensified within the British government and the Labor Party regarding a new leadership crisis. He has become the sixth Prime Minister of Britain to leave his post in the last 10 years.

In his address to the nation, he told that he has talked to Britain’s King Charles III about this. Various policy steps and political pressures taken during the tenure of Keir Starmer are being considered as the main reasons for this big decision. Now the eyes of global leaders are fixed on London to know in whose hands the command of power will be handed over after this political reshuffle in Britain.

Keir Starmer will continue to serve as acting Prime Minister until a new leader is elected. More than 100 Labor MPs publicly demanded his resignation as discontent deepened within the party. This pressure on former Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham increased further after he became MP. Burnham is now being considered the strongest contender in the race for the Labor Party and the country’s next Prime Minister.

Reason for leaving Starmer’s chair

Keir Starmer was under immense political pressure to step down due to several major controversies. He appointed Peter Mandelson, who had links to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as Britain’s ambassador to the US. Apart from this, taking U-turns on tax and social welfare schemes also caused huge damage to his image. Even after winning with a huge majority of 174 seats in July 2024, he had to leave his seat midway.

Andy Burnham has entered Parliament and is the frontrunner for the post of Prime Minister after winning a big victory in the Makerfield by-election. He has badly defeated the candidate of right-wing leader Nigel Farage’s party. Apart from Burnham, current Finance Minister Rachel Reeves and former Health Minister Wes Streeting are also involved in this important race. Burnham has promised to change the country’s economic policy and end trickle-down economics.

Impact on the historic deal between India and UK

This sudden resignation of Keir Starmer may have the biggest impact on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and Britain. This much-awaited historic trade agreement was to be fully implemented from July 15. This big agreement is expected to add 4.8 billion pounds to the British economy. Along with this, there is also a huge increase of 25.5 billion pounds in bilateral trade between the two countries.
