Keir Starmer resigns, sixth British PM to step down in 10 years
Desk: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned from the post of Prime Minister and leader of the Labor Party. Starmer said the question was being raised within his party whether he was the right person to lead the party in the next general election. He said that he has received his party’s reply and he accepts it respectfully. Starmer said that now the time has come for a new leader to take command of the party and lead it towards the next elections. Starmer is the sixth PM in the last 10 years to step down before the completion of his term. Earlier, David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak could not complete their tenure.
Keir Starmer said in a statement that there was a question in my party whether I would lead in the next election. The parliamentary party had doubts about my leadership. People felt that I could not succeed. I preferred those voices. That’s why I have resigned. Starmer further said that I have uprooted anti-Semitic ideas. I have given priority to national security and economy. When I was appointed Prime Minister two years ago, it was a proud moment for me.
The Labor Party will hold a meeting to elect its new leader. Burnham, who recently won the elections, is the frontrunner in the race for Prime Minister. Burnham has the declared support of 100 MPs. Burnham will take oath as MP in Parliament today. He had won the by-election of Makerfield seat last week. Starmer has said that he will appeal to the Labor Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to start the nomination process for the new party leader from 9 July. He told that the process of selection of the new leader will be completed by July 16, which is the time when the summer vacation of Parliament starts.
If an election is held to elect a new leader, the new Labor Party leader will be elected before Parliament begins in September. However, it is not yet clear whether there will be a contest for the new leader or not. If only Andy Burnham files nomination from the Labor Party. As soon as the nomination process is over, he can be declared the new leader of the party. Until a new leader is chosen, Starmer will remain as Prime Minister.
