‘Kept me like a prisoner, made a joke of the Constitution,’ the new President of Bangladesh exposed Mohammad Yunus
New Delhi: A new storm has arisen in the politics of Bangladesh. Just a few days after the new government assumed power, President Mohammad Shahabuddin has made serious allegations against former Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus. The President claimed that during the one and a half year interim rule of Yunus, he was kept as a prisoner in Banga Bhavan and the Constitution was repeatedly violated.
Yunus violated the constitution
In an interview given to ‘Kaler Kantho’ newspaper, President Shahabuddin said that Yunus did not follow his constitutional obligations. The Chief Advisor should have met the President and given information in writing after his foreign trip, but he made 14-15 foreign trips and did not inform even once.
The President was neither given information about state affairs nor were any foreign agreements or decisions discussed. He said, "He never came to meet. I was kept completely in the dark."
The condition is like imprisonment in a palace.
Shahabuddin alleged that he was kept captive in Bangabhaban for the last one and a half years. His two foreign trips to Kosovo and Qatar were stopped by the Yunus administration. 133 ordinances were issued, but many of them had no justification. The President was not given any information on these.
Conspiracy to remove unconstitutional
The President revealed that the Yunus government tried to remove him in an unconstitutional manner. Once a plan was made to bring in the former Chief Justice and appoint him in his place, but a judge rejected it citing constitutional obligations.
On the night of 22 October 2024, a huge crowd gathered outside Bangabhaban and an attempt was made to loot the house. The situation was controlled with the help of the army. The President made it "terrible night" told.
Army and BNP joined together
Shahabuddin said that the three chiefs of Bangladesh Army and the BNP leadership helped in maintaining constitutional continuity. He clearly said that his defeat as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces would be the defeat of the entire force. The army promised to stop it at all costs.
