Kerala is Secular, Not a Place of Hate High Court Halts ‘The Kerala Story 2’ Release:
Just when the makers of The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond were getting ready for a massive theatrical release, the Kerala High Court stepped in with a major reality check. In a significant move, the court has stayed the film’s release, questioning how the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) cleared it in the first place.
What is the Court’s Problem? Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas didn’t mince words. While hearing a batch of petitions, the judge pointed out that Kerala is a state known for its communal harmony and secular fabric. However, the teaser and trailer of the film seemed to paint a completely different, much darker picture.
The court noted that the film claims to be “inspired by true events” and uses the name of the state in its title, even though the story allegedly focuses on events happening across India, not just Kerala. The judge remarked, “Kerala lives in total harmony. But you have portrayed it as if this is happening everywhere in the state. This is a wrong indication.”
Questioning the Censor Board One of the biggest points of contention was the “U/A” certificate given to the film. The High Court expressed surprise that a movie with such sensitive and potentially inflammatory content wasn’t given an “A” (Adults Only) rating. The court went as far as to say that there was a “prima facie non-application of mind” by the Censor Board.
The “15-Day” Deadline The court has now ordered the CBFC to take a fresh look at the revision petitions filed against the movie. Until the board re-examines the film and passes a new order—a process expected to take about two weeks—the film cannot be screened in theaters.
What the Makers Say The producers, led by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, argued that the film is a work of art and shouldn’t be stalled based on a two-minute teaser. They even agreed to pull down the controversial teasers from social media to show their cooperation. However, the court remained firm, stating that the dignity of the state and the potential for communal tension cannot be ignored.
For now, fans and critics alike will have to wait. Whether the film eventually sees the light of day or faces heavy cuts remains to be seen.
