Kevin Bacon’s Sci-Fi Horror Is Leaving Netflix
A 2000 psychological horror starring Kevin Bacon will leave Netflix’s platform next month. Helmed by Paul Verhoeven, the movie was a box-office success, despite the critics’ negative reception on Rotten Tomatoes.
Hollow Man to leave Netflix next month
From March 1, 2026, Hollow Man will no longer be a part of Netflix’s expansive library (via What’s on Netflix).
Paul Verhoeven directed the movie with a script from Gary Scott Thompson and Andrew W. Marlowe. Its cast features Kevin Bacon, Elisabeth Shue, Josh Brolin, Kim Dickens, Greg Grunberg, and Joey Slotnick, among others.
The story centers on Sebastian Caine (Bacon), who leads a team of scientists in developing a serum that renders a person invisible. After successfully reversing the procedure and returning an invisible gorilla to visibility, Sebastian volunteers to be the first human subject of the experiment, despite lacking authorization from upper management. While he succeeds in becoming invisible, the team is unable to reverse the process. As a result, Sebastian descends into madness, traps his team in the lab, and begins to kill them one by one.
Released on August 4, 2000, the movie opened to a negative reception from both critics and audiences. It currently has a 25% Tomatometer score and a 28% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In a 2013 interview with The Hollywood Reporterthe director admitted to not liking the movie retrospectively. “I decided after Hollow Man, this is a movie, the first movie that I made that I thought I should not have made,” he shared. “I thought there might have been 20 directors in Hollywood who could have done that. I felt depressed with myself after 2002,” Verhoeven added.
Nonetheless, it was a box-office success, earning over $190 million worldwide. A few years later, the movie received a stand-alone sequel in 2006, Hollow Man 2, starring Christian Slater.
While Hollow Man’s story didn’t exactly meet audiences’ expectations, it was commended for its achievement in visual effects. It earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects, but lost to Gladiator that year.
