Khakhra is a very light, crispy and healthy snack from Gujarat. It is rolled like a thin roti and baked on low flame. Its biggest specialty is that Khakhra is a snack that can be stored for a long time. It is usually eaten for breakfast or with tea. It contains less oil, hence it is also considered a healthy snack.

Homemade Khakhra is fresher, cleaner and more nutritious than the market ones, and you can make it at home very easily. So let us know its simple recipe.

Material

Wheat flour-1 cup
Oil – 1–2 teaspoons
Salt-½ teaspoon
Celery-½ teaspoon
Turmeric-½ teaspoon
Water (to knead the dough)

Method

  1. Add wheat flour, salt, celery and turmeric in a vessel. Add 1–2 spoons of oil in it and mix well.
  2. Now add water little by little and knead a stiff dough and make small balls of the dough.
  3. Roll out each ball very thinly (even thinner than roti).
  4. Heat the pan and put the rolled khakhra on the pan. Cook on low flame while pressing with a cloth or spatula until it becomes crisp from both the sides.
  5. When the Khakhra becomes nicely crisp, take it out in a plate and let it cool. Serve with tea, curd or pickle. If desired, sprinkle some chaat masala on top and serve.

tips

  1. It is important to roll Khakhra very thinly, only then it will become crisp.
  2. Roast on low flame only, otherwise it may burn.
  3. You can also make different flavors by adding fenugreek, cumin or kasoori methi to it.
