Khamenei’s assassination and Indian government’s diplomacy

By Varsha Pargat

As soon as the war between America and Iran started, the first and biggest blow to Iran was the assassination of its Supreme Leader Khamenei. America was under the grave misconception that after the assassination of Khamenei, it would take over Iran and make its favorite person its ruler. But all the plans of America were foiled. Iran is fighting even after Khamenei’s death. Iran changed its strategy and started continuously attacking its neighboring countries. Wherever America has military bases, it is continuously attacking.

Due to this policy of Iran, many countries have fallen into the grip of war. Donald Trump’s path is not looking easy right now. In the present situation it can be said that one is fighting to remove power and the other is fighting to save its power.

When Donald Trump says that “there has to be a change of regime in Iran, and democracy has to be established.” On the other hand, Donald Trump wants to save his power. His declining popularity indicates that if mid-term elections are held in America now, his defeat is certain. Impeachment motion can also be brought against him. This fear is haunting them and that is why they have thrown America into war. Now the biggest challenge before Donald Trump is “how to get out of this war”.

Former US General Colin Powell, who has also served as Secretary of State, says – “Force should be employed only as a last resort, after all non-violent means have been exhausted. If war is necessary, however, it should proceed in pursuit of a clear objective, with a clear exit strategy and with public support. It should employ overwhelming, decisive force to defeat the enemy, using every resource including military, economic, political and social.

Powell further says – “Military leader could not quietly acquiesce in half-hearted warfare for half-backed reasons that the American People could not understand or support.”

Donald Trump’s decision to go to war looks something like this. According to the war plans made by the Trump government, this war does not seem to be progressing. The way Iran responded to the war and the strategy with which it is moving ahead has shocked the Gulf countries including America. Along with the Gulf countries, Europe is also burning in this fire.

Khamenei’s assassination and Indian government’s diplomacy

As far as India is concerned, India has refrained from making any unwanted comments regarding this war. Ever since the war started and Khamenei’s assassination, India’s opposition and leaders have been questioning the silence of the Indian government.

Not only this, Congress leader Mrs. Sonia Gandhi has written an article in a big newspaper strongly attacking Modiji’s silence and the foreign policy of the Indian government.

The Indian government worked very carefully for the first three-four days. Kept distance from giving any reaction. But behind the scenes, the government maintained dialogue with the heads of many Gulf countries. Expressed his concern. The Government of India made efforts for the safety of millions of Indians living in Gulf countries and how they can be safely brought back to their country from there. The Government of India and Foreign Minister Dr. Jaishankar spoke on phone in this regard. Also spoke to French President Emmanuel Macron.

On the other hand, the opposition was attacking that the government’s silence on the death of Khamenei meant – “India is with America and Israel”. Accused of “tacit approval”. But meanwhile we saw that Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri went to the Iranian Embassy in India and wrote a “condolence message” on behalf of the Indian government. While talking to the Ambassador of Iran, expressed condolences on behalf of the Government of India.

The government hit two birds with one stone. One was that he sent his condolences to the people of Iran and at the same time surprised the opposition. Congress and opposition parties did not expect this at all.

Along with this, one more thing needs to be said that a message was also given to the Shia Muslims in India who were seen protesting against America. The politics being done by the opposition on this issue got a setback. Now it is seen that many Congress leaders are visiting the Iranian Embassy to express their condolences. This is also strengthening the message that the opposition is ignoring the national interest in order to pursue its politics.

By sending Vikram Misri, the Government of India has given a big message to the people and opposition of the country by striking a balance between national interest and foreign policy.
