Kharge said in CWC meeting – Modi government stabbed the poor in the back, mass movement will have to be started on MNREGA

New Delhi. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday accused the Modi government of ‘stabbing the poor in the back’ by replacing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) with the ‘Developed India-Ji Ram Ji Act’ and said that a nationwide mass movement will have to be launched on this issue. Addressing the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, he condemned the attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh and said that the whole of India is worried by this.

Kharge called upon the Congress leaders to gear up for the upcoming assembly elections and also said that the Special Intensive Review (SIR) is a well-planned conspiracy to limit democratic rights and in such a situation, it has to be ensured that the names of Congress voters are not deleted. Kharge said in the meeting, “We have gathered today to think and make future strategy at such a time when there is a serious crisis on democracy, constitution and rights of citizens in the country.”

He alleged, “Recently, in the winter session of Parliament, the Modi government has abolished MNREGA and left crores of poor and weaker sections destitute. Along with kicking the poor in their stomach, the Modi government has stabbed them in the back. The Modi government has made a systematic and brutal attack on the right to work.” Kharge said that the Modi government is not concerned about the poor but is only concerned about the profits of a few big capitalists. He said that MNREGA was such a visionary step of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, which was appreciated by the whole world.

The Congress President said, “This scheme changed the face of rural India. It became the world’s largest rural employment program. This stopped migration and freed the villages from famine, hunger and exploitation. This scheme assured Dalits, tribals, women and landless laborers that the government stands with them in the fight against poverty.

Kharge claimed that the Modi government scrapped it and imposed the new law without any study or evaluation, without any consultation with states or political parties. He said that all this work was done like three black agricultural laws.
