Kia Seltos + Hyundai Creta Outsell Maruti Victoris + Grand Vitara + Toyota Hyrider

The competition in the mid-size SUV space is becoming increasingly fierce. The Hyundai Creta has long been enjoying a clear dominance in this segment, despite the influx of multiple challengers. Sales data from March 2026 reveals an interesting development: the Creta and new-generation Seltos together, have sold more units than the numbers posted by Maruti Grand Vitara, Victoris and Hyryder combined.

In March, Hyundai sold 17,838 units of the Creta in India. Kia sold 11041 units of the Seltos during the same period. That makes it a total of 28,879 units.

Maruti Suzuki sold 6746 units of Grand Vitara and 11062 units of the Victoris during the month. Toyota posted sales of 10,206 units of the Hyryder. These add up to a total of 28,014 units. This, if you see, is 865 units less than the combined sales figures of the Seltos and Creta. The Koreans continue to have a solid presence in India’s compact SUV segment, even in March 2026.

The more interesting part here is the powertrain sharing between these models. The Creta and Seltos share the same set of engines and transmissions. They are offered with a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol, 1.5 turbocharged petrol and 1.5 turbocharged diesel engines. Both manual and automatic transmissions are available.

There is now a clear difference between the platforms used. The Creta continues to be based on the K2 platform while the second-generation Seltos is based on the third-generation K3 platform. The next-generation Creta, expected to arrive in 2027, will make its transition to the third-generation platform.

The Grand Vitara is essentially the badge-engineered version of the Hyryder. They share the same platform and engines. The Victoris also uses the same set of engines- 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol mild-hybrid, 1.5 strong hybrid petrol and CNG. The Hyryder and Grand Vitara also use the same.

The Grand Vitara showed an uptrend in month-on-month sales. It sold 887 more units in March than what it did in February, translating to a 15% month-on-month increase. For the Victoris, the monthly numbers dropped by 1959 units- 15% deline. The Hyryder sold 847 units more in March compared to the 9359 units sold in February.

second generation kia seltos

Launched in January this year, the second-generation Seltos continues to be in good demand. Deliveries began in mid-January. In the first month, it sold 10,639 units. In February, these numbers stood at 10,308 units and in March, these rose to 11041 units- marking a 7% month-on-month increase.

Priced from Rs 10.99 lakh, ex-showroom , this SUV is currently available in 10 trims- HTE, HTE (O), HTK, HTK (O), HTX, HTX (A), GTX, GTX (A), X-Line and X-Line (A). Two high-end trims are expected to be added to the lineup in near term, taking the total count to 12. The carmaker has packaged this SUV well, in terms of cabin room, comfort and features. Packaging plays a central role in sustaining its demand here.

The recently-launched Tata Sierra and Renault Duster are also in high demand. In March, Renault posted dispatches of 1402 units of the Duster. These are likely to be dealer dispatches- demo and display cars, as the actual customer deliveries would start commencing in April only.

Tata Motors sold 9003 units of the new Sierra in March. This is 1903 units more than February’s 7100 units. The carmaker seems to be ramping up the production at its Sanand plant and carefully clearing Sierra’s order backlog. The SUV had gathered over 70,000 reservations right in the first day.

Skoda sold Kushaqs and Volkswagen posted sales of 908 Taiguns during the month. Honda sold 2467 units of the Elevate, marking a month-on-month-increase of 55%.
