Kisan Maandhan Yojana: Like government employees, farmers can now get monthly pension after the age of 60 years. It is often observed that as the age increases, the farmers become physically unable to do agricultural work and thus their source of income is cut off. To address this issue, the Central Government has launched the ‘Pradhan Mantri Kisan Mandhan Yojana’; The objective of which is to empower farmers by making them independent in their old age.

Financial empowerment of farmers
Launched in 2019, the scheme aims to financially empower small and marginal farmers who have no other means of livelihood. Under this scheme, any farmer in the age group of 18 to 40 years can register for ‘PM-MaanDhan Scheme’. The most important feature of this scheme is that the amount of investment required is very modest even less than the daily cost of tea and breakfast.
‘PM Kisan Mandhan Yojana’ Pension Scheme
‘PM Kisan Mandhan Yojana’ is a pension scheme. Under this scheme, the contribution ranges from a minimum of ₹55 to a maximum of ₹200. If a farmer joins the scheme at the age of 18, he has to pay a premium of ₹55 only; Which does not put any burden on his financial budget.
Based on the principle of ‘equal contribution’
Another highly commendable feature of the ‘Pradhan Mantri Kisan Mandhan Yojana’ is that the scheme is based on the principle of ‘equal contribution’. This means that whatever amount of installments the farmer deposits in his account, the central government deposits the same amount in his pension fund on its behalf. For example, if your monthly installment is 100, the government will also contribute 100.
Also provided protection to farmer’s wife
This provision is not limited to the farmer; So she also provides protection to their family especially the farmer’s wife. If the beneficiary farmer dies due to any reason, his wife will continue to get 50 percent of the pension i.e. ₹1,500 per month as ‘family pension’.
They can get benefits
Farmers in the age group of 18 to 40 years can avail this scheme. They should not have more than 2 hectares of land. If a farmer is already a member of any other government pension or social security scheme like EPFO, NPS or ESIC, he will not be eligible to avail this scheme. Farmers can register for ‘PM Kisan Mandhan Yojana’ by visiting CSC at their nearest ‘Common Service Centre’. Farmers need to carry identity card, bank passbook and copies of land documents like khasra, khatouni with them for registration.
‘Pradhan Mantri Kisan Mandhan Yojana’ is the beginning of a new era in the self-respecting and dignified life of farmers. Through this scheme, farmers can now focus fully on their farming activities, freed from the worries of old age. A small savings like just Rs 55 can turn into a huge capital in future; Due to which the farmers will not have time to reach out to others for help.
