Kishan to lead SRH in Cummins absence – Tezzbuzz
Hyderabad, Mar 19: Sunrisers Hyderabad have handed Ishan Kishan the captaincy for the start of IPL 2026, with regular skipper Pat Cummins sidelined due to a back injury, forcing an early leadership reshuffle.
Kishan will serve as interim captain for the opening matches, while opener Abhishek Sharma has been named vice-captain. The move puts immediate pressure on Kishan, who now has to balance aggressive batting with leadership responsibility — something he hasn’t consistently proven at this level yet.
Cummins’ absence is not minor. The Australian skipper has been out with a stress-related lower back injury, already missing key international assignments, including the Ashes and T20 World Cup. For SRH, this is a leadership gap at the worst possible time — right at the start of the season.
Kishan, bought for ₹11.25 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction, comes into the role on the back of strong form. He scored 317 runs in nine matches last season at a ridiculous average of 80.25 and a strike rate close to 200. That’s elite output — but performance as a player doesn’t automatically translate to captaincy success.
Abhishek Sharma, his deputy, adds another layer of intrigue. He currently sits at the top of the ICC T20I rankings, making this one of the rare cases where both captain and vice-captain are top-tier performers. But again — rankings don’t win matches, decisions do.
Interestingly, with Cummins out, all 10 IPL teams will start the season with Indian captains — something that hasn’t happened in years. Good narrative, but irrelevant if teams don’t deliver.
SRH will open their campaign against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 28 in Bengaluru. That’s not a soft start — it’s a pressure test from ball one.
Here’s the reality: Kishan has zero margin for a slow start. If he performs, this becomes a defining career shift. If he doesn’t, he goes back to being just another explosive batter who couldn’t handle responsibility.
