Kitchen Hacks: These fruits kept in the fridge can become enemies of your health. Learn the right way to store them to save taste and nutrition.
News India Live, Digital Desk: We often put fruits in the fridge to keep them fresh, but do you know that for some fruits the fridge proves to be not a ‘boon’ but a ‘curse’? According to both science and Ayurveda, low temperatures can completely destroy the taste, aroma and nutrients of some fruits. Here is a list of fruits that you should not keep in the refrigerator: Fruits Storage Guide: Many people think that the refrigerator increases the shelf life of everything, but some fruits become victims of ‘chilling injury’. This not only makes them tasteless, but also speeds up the process of their spoilage.1. Banana: Banana is a tropical fruit. By keeping it in the refrigerator, its peels turn black very quickly. Disadvantage: Cold temperature stops the natural process of ripening of banana and its peel releases ethylene gas which can also spoil other fruits.2. Watermelon and Melons: Whole watermelon or melon should never be kept in the refrigerator. Science: Research shows that keeping the watermelon at room temperature maintains the amount of antioxidants (such as lycopene). The cold of the refrigerator destroys these nutrients. However, after cutting, you can cover it and keep it in the refrigerator for some time.3. Citrus Fruits: By keeping lemon, orange and seasonal fruits in the refrigerator, their upper layer becomes hard and the juice inside starts drying up. Correct method: Keep them in a mesh bag at room temperature. This keeps their juice and sourness intact.4. Apple: Apple needs to be kept in the refrigerator only if you want to store it for more than 1-2 weeks. Caution: Apple releases ‘ethylene gas’. If you keep it in the fridge with other vegetables, those vegetables may get cooked very quickly and get spoiled.5. Papaya: Papaya loses its sweetness when kept in the refrigerator and its texture becomes soggy. Never refrigerate an unripe papaya, as it will never ripen properly. Golden Rules for Storing Fruit: Do not separate the banana from the bunch: Always leave the banana in the bunch and cover the top (stem) with plastic wrap. Do not wash: Wash the fruit only when you are going to eat it. There is a fear of fungus in the refrigerator due to moisture. Airy place: Always keep fruits in an open and ventilated basket.
