KKR CEO broke his silence on not retaining Iyer, said- He was the first choice for retention but….
IPL 2024 champion Kolkata Knight Riders announced their captain Shreyas Iyer (Shreyas Iyer) was released. The franchise failed to agree on terms with Iyer, leading to him leaving the team ahead of IPL 2025.
Iyer joined the franchise from Kolkata in 2022 for Rs 12.25 crore and was made the captain. Under his captaincy, KKR won their third IPL title in 2024. Since then, both sides held several meetings regarding a possible extension of the contract but things did not work out. Now KKR CEO Venky Mysore has broken his silence on this matter. He has said that Iyer was his first choice for retention but they could not agree on a deal.
Mysore said, “It is a matter of mutual consent. It is not a unilateral right of any franchise. The players have to consider different factors and have to agree. Somewhere, that agreement has to be reached due to different factors. It doesn't happen – money or someone wants to taste his value or whatever. He was the captain, so everything has to be built around the leadership.”
The KKR CEO further said, “We had specifically selected him for this in 2022 and unfortunately, he was injured in 2023. As soon as he came back, he got his captaincy back. We made it very clear. Granted it will be yours when you come back. So, he has been a key part and he has done a great job. I enjoy the personal relationship with him, but at the end of the day, people have to make their own decisions. And they have to decide what's best for them and what direction they want to go in and also the commercial value.”
KKR has retained Rinku Singh for Rs 13 crore, Varun Chakraborty, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell for Rs 12 crore each. Apart from this, Harshit Rana and Ramandeep Singh have been retained for Rs 4 crore each.
