KL Rahul on the verge of achieving big milestone, needs hundred in fourth Test against Australia to become first Team India batter to…
KL Rahul has been the only in-form Indian batter in the ongoing five-Test series against Australia. He has played a few important knocks for the visitors in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. India will rely on his performance in the fourth contest at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Barring Rahul, the other batters in the top order have struggled for runs. He was not sure of his place in the Playing XI, but Rohit Sharma’s absence from the first Test opened the gates for him. Since then, it has been impossible for the team management to remove him from the opening slot. Rohit is batting at the No.6 position because of KL’s magnificent display. The 32-year-old has been the best batter of his team.
He is the team’s top run-getter and second behind Travis Head on the list of the highest run-getters in the BGT so far. The right-handed batter has amassed 235 runs in the three red-ball games at an average of 47, including two fifties.
He has come close to scoring a hundred on two occasions. Rahul accumulated 77 runs in Perth while he posted 84 at the Gabba in Brisbane. He will aim to touch the three-figure mark at the MCG. If Rahul manages to get a hundred in Melbourne, he will become the first Indian cricketer in history to score three tons in a Boxing Day Test. Sachin Tendulkar and Ajinkya Rahane have smashed two each in the past.
The current batter scored hundreds in the 2021 and 2023 Boxing Day Test matches against South Africa. He was an opener in 2021, while he batted at the number six slot last year.
The MCG game will also be Rahul’s 10th anniversary of his international debut, which happened against Australia in 2014. He scored 3 and 1 in the game. He scored his only hundred in Australia in the second Test of his career in Sydney in 2015.
