It is believed that the name Colosseum comes from a huge statue of Emperor Nero located nearby. This statue was so big that it was called Colossus. The name Colosseum was later formed from the same word.
How was the Colosseum built?
The strongest materials of that time were used to build the Colosseum. It includes travertine stone, volcanic rock (tuff), Roman concrete, bricks. This building was built completely free standing. Many theaters of that time were built with the support of hills, but the Colosseum was built without any natural support. It could seat about 50,000 to 80,000 people at a time. The seating arrangement of the audience was according to the social level. The king and senior officials sat below, while the common people sat on the upper seats.
What happened in the Colosseum?
- The most famous event in the Colosseum was the fight of gladiators. Gladiators were warriors who fought with swords and other weapons. People used to come in large numbers to watch these fights.
- Animals like lion, elephant, tiger, leopard, bear, giraffe and crocodile were brought here. Hunting and fighting games were organized with these animals.
- Plays based on ancient Roman wars and mythological stories were also performed here. Many times mock wars and sea battles were also demonstrated.

Many Christians believe that many Christians were punished and murdered here during the Roman Empire. Therefore this place is also considered important in Christianity. Even today, every year on “Good Friday”, the Pope makes a special religious visit here.
