Kota Suicides: 25-year old coaching teacher dies, investigation underway

New Delhi: Kota, Rajasthan, known for its competitive exam coaching has recently witnessed another incident of suicide. A 25-year-old coaching teacher named Vivek Sharma ended his life by consuming pesticides. This incident comes just days after two student suicides in the city.

Vivek Sharma taught at a private coaching institute and had been residing in the city for the past four months. He was the son of the gunman of Rajasthan’s Education Minister, Madan Dilawar.

On Thursday evening, Vivek’s family enquired after he did not answer their calls. His acquaintances visited his room at around 10 PM and found him unconscious. The police were informed immediately, and Vivek was rushed to the nearby hospital. However, the doctors declared him dead on arrival. later, a post-mortem was done which confirmed that he had consumed pesticide.

Investigation in progress

The police are actively investigating the case and on Friday a forensic exam of Vivek’s room was done. The samples have been sent for analysis. Moreover, to assist with the investigation and claim the body after the post-mortem Vivek’s family reached Kota on Friday.

The incident highlights the increasing mental health crisis faced not only by students but also by those who are involved in the coaching ecosystem. With the city of Kota already grappling with frequent student suicide cases, the death of a young teacher raises questions among people about the overall well-being of individuals in a pressuring environment.

Recently, a 19-year-old Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) candidate allegedly died by suicide in Kota in the first week of the month. The coaching hub witnessed a total of 17 cases of suicides by students in the year 2024, with 26 in the year 2023, as per reports.
