KP Oli Arrested: Strict action against former Prime Minister as soon as power changed in Nepal, detained on charges of Gen-G violence

Kathmandu: There has been a big upheaval in Nepal’s politics. Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been arrested for his alleged role in last year’s deadly Gen-G protests. This action has taken place within just a few days of the new government coming to power, which has created a political stir across the country.

Along with Oli, his former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has also been arrested. Kathmandu Valley Police detained both of them on Saturday morning and now further legal process has started.

Reaction from both sides on the arrest

The new government has clarified that this action is not being taken out of any political vendetta, but in accordance with the law. New Home Minister Sudan Gurung said, “A promise is a promise and the law is supreme. The culprits will not be spared under any circumstances.”

At the same time, KP Oli has called his arrest a political vendetta and said that he will fight a legal battle.

What was the Zen-ji movement?

In September last year, massive protests took place in Nepal against corruption, which were named Gen-Ji movement. These demonstrations suddenly turned violent and more than 70 people died in just two days. After this violence, there was huge pressure on the Oli government and ultimately his government fell.

The report of the inquiry commission opened the curtain

The recently constituted high level inquiry commission clearly stated in its report that the senior officials in power at that time were negligent in controlling the situation. The commission held several people responsible, including KP Oli, Ramesh Lekhak and the then Inspector General of Nepal Police, Chandra Kuber Khapung. The report recommended a maximum sentence of up to 10 years.

The new government has decided to implement the recommendations of the commission. Home Minister Gurung called it the “first concrete step towards justice” and said that action against the culprits is necessary to give a new direction to the country.

What next?

The inquiry commission has recommended action not only against Oli and the author, but also against several other senior officials and police officers. In such a situation, more arrests may be made in the coming days.

This whole matter has now become a big test for Nepal’s justice system and political stability. This legal process, which started with the change of power, can also affect the future politics of the country.
