This character is as mysterious as it is important, because despite being from the lineage of Shri Krishna, he is seen fighting on behalf of the Kauravas.

Who was Kritavarma?

Kritavarma was Yaduvanshi, that is, he belonged to the same lineage in which Shri Krishna was born. While Shri Krishna became the guide and ally of the Pandavas, the Narayani army of the Yadu dynasty stood on the side of the Kauravas. Kritavarma was the chief commander of this Narayani army and was also considered a close friend of Kaurava king Duryodhana.

Role in Mahabharata war

Kritavarma played an important role on behalf of the Kauravas in the fierce war of Mahabharata. By the end of the war when most of the warriors had been killed, only three Maharathi remained alive:

• Kritavarma

How did it end?

After the Mahabharata war, mutual discord started among the Yaduvansh. Meanwhile, Satyaki, who was a devotee of Shri Krishna and a brave warrior, killed Kritavarma. This incident shows how people of the same clan ended up in mutual conflict.

Why did the Yaduvansh end?

Yaduvansh was a kind of strong and organized system, but it was divided into many factions. Some people were supporters of Pandavas, while some like Duryodhana were friends of Kauravas. Shri Krishna kept controlling this internal conflict throughout his life, so that the power of Yaduvansh remained intact. But after the Mahabharata, when the era changed, the need for this balance ended and ultimately the Yadu dynasty declined.
