Kuldeep Singh Sengar case will be heard in SC, demonstration held at Jantar Mantar

A new twist has come in the Unnao rape case. On Monday, the Supreme Court will hear the petition of CBI, in which the decision of Delhi High Court has been challenged. On December 23, Delhi High Court had suspended the life sentence of former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and granted him bail. Sengar has been declared guilty in this case.

This case will be heard by a bench of three judges comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice Augustine George Masih. CBI has said that the High Court’s decision is wrong and it should be cancelled. The victim has expressed full trust in the Supreme Court.

Said- Trust in Supreme Court

Speaking to ANI, he said, ‘I have full faith in the Supreme Court that I will get justice. I am raising the voice of every woman. If CBI had acted earlier, I would have got justice sooner. Sengar raped me. My father was murdered. My family members were killed. The security of my family and witnesses was removed. My husband was fired from his job. My children are not safe at home.

Women and workers protested at Jantar Mantar in Delhi against this decision. They are demanding justice for the victim.

What is the whole matter?

This matter is from 2017. At that time the minor victim accused Kuldeep Singh Sengar of raping her at his home. Sengar was a BJP MLA at that time. Later the party expelled him. No action was taken for several months after the complaint. In April 2018, the victim tried to set herself on fire outside the Chief Minister’s house in Lucknow. Due to this the matter came into discussion in the entire country.

After this the victim’s father died in police custody. The family alleged that Sengar’s supporters beat him up. This further increased public anger. During the trial in July 2019, the victim met with a road accident. A truck hit his car. In this, two of his relative aunts were killed and the lawyer was injured. CBI said that this incident was a conspiracy to kill the victim.

Trial transferred to Delhi

Seeing the seriousness of the case, the Supreme Court transferred the trial from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi. In December 2019, a Delhi court convicted Sengar of rape and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Recently, on 23 December 2025, Delhi High Court suspended Sengar’s sentence. The court said that he has already spent seven years and five months in jail. His appeal is pending, hence bail was granted.

But Sengar will remain in jail for now because he has been sentenced to 10 years in the second case of custodial death of the victim’s father and has not got bail in that case. The victim and her family hope that the Supreme Court will deliver justice. The eyes of the entire country are on this hearing.
