Kumar Sanu files defamation case against ex-wife, know the entire controversy

Kumar Sanu: Famous playback singer Kumar Sanu, often called the voice of a generation, is in the news not for his music but for a long-running personal feud that has come to the fore again.

The singer has approached the Bombay High Court, filing a defamation case against his ex-wife Rita Bhattacharya, accusing her of damaging his reputation.

Kumar Sanu has sought ₹30 lakh as damages, claiming that Rita’s public statements have caused serious damage to his image and mental health. The hearing of this high-profile case took place on December 17, 2025, due to which his bitter past once again came in front of the people.

Ex-wife made serious allegations

In September this year, many old and recent interviews of Rita Bhattacharya started being shared widely on social media. In these interviews, Rita made serious allegations against Kumar Sanu, and claimed that he misbehaved with her during her pregnancy.

She alleged that she was locked in the kitchen, denied milk and kept away from necessary medical care. Rita also accused the singer of having extra-marital affairs and neglecting his family. After these interviews went viral, public opinion on social media rapidly changed against Kumar Sanu.

Petition filed in court

This defamation petition has been filed on behalf of Kumar Sanu by famous lawyer Sana Raees Khan, who is also a former contestant of Bigg Boss. The legal team says that Rita’s statements are a direct violation of the divorce settlement made in 2001.

At the time of their divorce in the Bandra Family Court, both parties had mutually agreed to one essential condition: that neither would make allegations against the other in public in future. It has been said in the petition that Rita’s interview broke this agreement, due to which Kumar Sanu’s global reputation suffered a lot and he had to face a lot of mental harassment. Ask for legal notices and extras

Apart from demanding monetary compensation, Kumar Sanu has also requested the court to direct all digital platforms and media portals to immediately remove the defamatory interviews.

Earlier, on September 27, legal notices were sent to Rita Bhattacharya and related media outlets, asking them to remove the content. Since no action was taken, Singer was left with no option but to take the matter to court.

The case continues to draw attention, demonstrating how old personal feuds can resurface in the digital age, with serious legal and reputational consequences.
