Kuwait Oil Update: Oil production will increase but the route is closed, exports are zero for the first time in 30 years
Big news has come regarding oil production in Kuwait. The government is preparing to increase production in June, but a big problem has arisen. Due to blockade on sea routes, Kuwait is not able to send its oil out. The situation was so bad that last month not a single barrel of crude oil could be exported from the country.
How much will oil production increase in Kuwait?
Kuwait’s Oil Minister has informed that oil production will be increased to 2.628 million barrels per day (bpd) in June. This decision has been taken jointly by seven countries of OPEC+, under which the total production target will be increased by 188,000 bpd. However, due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, this growth seems to be limited only on paper at present.
Why did exports stop and what is the main reason?
Kuwait exported zero oil in April 2026. This is the first time since the 1991 Gulf War that not a single barrel of oil has gone out of Kuwait. The biggest reason for this is the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. America’s CENTCOM has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports and there have also been reports of attacks and threats on oil bases from Iran. For this reason, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) has invoked ‘Force Majeure’, which means that the company is unable to complete its deliveries due to extraordinary circumstances. At present the produced oil is being stored in storage.
