Kuwait Petroleum confirms fires at Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery after drone strike
Kuwait Petroleum Corporation has confirmed fires at the Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery following a drone strike early on Friday, April 3, 2026, according to state news reports.
No casualties have been reported in the incident.
The Mina Al-Ahmadi facility, one of Kuwait’s key oil refineries operated by the state-owned company, experienced fires in some units after the strike. Emergency response teams were deployed, and certain units were shut down as a precaution.
This marks the latest reported incident at the refinery, which had previously faced drone attacks in March 2026 that also caused fires but no injuries.
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East escalated significantly in late February 2026, involving direct military exchanges between Iran, Israeland the United Stateswith ripple effects across the Gulf region.
Iran has conducted repeated drone and missile strikes on energy infrastructure and other targets in several Gulf countries, including Kuwaitas part of retaliatory actions.
Background of the Conflict
The war intensified around February 28, 2026, with Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iranian targets. Iran responded with large-scale missile and drone barrages aimed at Israel and U.S. interests, while also targeting Gulf states perceived as aligned with the U.S. or hosting American assets.
This has led to attacks on oil refineries, tankers, airports, and other facilities in countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatarand Kuwait. Iran has also disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil exports.
Incidents Involving Kuwait
Kuwait has faced multiple reported Iranian drone attacks since mid-March 2026:
- Mina Al-Ahmadi Refinery Attacks (March 19–20, 2026): The refinery, one of Kuwait’s largest (with capacity around 346,000–730,000 barrels per day depending on units), was struck on consecutive days. Fires broke out in several operational units, but emergency teams contained them. No casualties were reported, and some units were shut down as a precaution. Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) confirmed the incidents as “hostile drone attacks.”
- Additional strikes targeted the nearby Mina Abdullah refinery, also causing contained fires with no injuries.
- Kuwait International Airport (late March 2026): A drone attack hit fuel storage tanks, sparking a large fire. No casualties were reported.
- Other incidents included strikes on a Kuwaiti oil tanker off Dubai (which caught fire) and reports of drones targeting military sites, with some injuries to personnel in one case.
Kuwait’s air defenses have intercepted many incoming threats, but some have caused limited damage to infrastructure.
