Kuwait’s company Zain gets 25-year mobile network license in Syria, big deal worth 747 million dollars

Kuwait’s well-known telecom company Zain Group has taken a huge step into Syria’s mobile network market. The company has received a full 25-year license to run a new mobile network in Syria. The cost of this massive project is approximately US$747 million. After this agreement, now this Kuwait company will prepare the entire infrastructure of the mobile network inside Syria and handle its management.

Big agreement signed with Syrian Ministry of Communications

The decision was taken after a rigorous tender process conducted by the Syrian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCOT). This deal was given official approval on 30 June 2026. Under this new agreement, a Syrian government entity will own 25 percent of the new company, while the remaining 75 percent will be held by Zain Group. In addition, Zain Company will also take over the entire infrastructure and equipment of MTN Syria already operating there, as MTN Group has decided to completely withdraw from Syria.

Will start with 5G technology in 2027

Zain Group Vice-Chairman and Group CEO Badr Al-Kharafi has thanked the Syrian government and its Communications Minister Abdulsalam Haikal. He said that this entire process has been completed in a very clean and professional manner. Syrian Communications Minister Abdulsalam Haykal said that this new network will be completely based on the fifth generation i.e. 5G technology, which will greatly strengthen the Syrian economy.

The company plans to modernize the network and introduce new technologies like 5G and AI in the next ten years. The company is aiming to launch its commercial services in the first quarter of 2027 under the brand ‘Zain Syria’. This will be preceded by a six-month transition period in which Zain will work closely with the Syrian Government and MTN to ensure uninterrupted service for its existing 6.3 million customers.
