On Monday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the qualification process for the return of cricket to the Olympics after 128 years. With this, the names of the first four teams to qualify for the Olympics in women’s cricket were also decided, in which India is also included.

Even though the Indian team could not make it to the last four of the T20 World Cup, it was the best performing team among the Asian teams participating in the tournament. According to the new ICC rules, Asia got only one direct quota and that remained in the name of India. That is, amidst the disappointment of being out of the World Cup, India achieved a big achievement by making it to the Olympics.

These three teams also qualified

According to ICC rules, one team each from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania was to be given direct entry. On this basis, India (Asia), Australia (Oceania), South Africa (Africa) and Great Britain (Europe) became the first four teams to qualify for the women’s cricket event at the Los Angeles Olympics 2028.

The host United States (USA) can get the fifth place in the six-team tournament. However, for this, USA will have to reach the top-15 in the ICC Women’s T20 Rankings any time between June 30 and December 31, 2026. If the USA is unable to do so, the spot will go to the highest-ranked non-qualifying team based on the ICC rankings as of March 1, 2027. The sixth and final spot will be decided by the first ICC Olympic Qualifier to be held in 2027. Eight teams will participate in it and those countries will be included which have not already qualified. ICC has also clarified the situation regarding West Indies. There are different countries represented at the Olympics, so if the West Indies team qualifies, a separate qualifying tournament will be held among the Caribbean countries.

What is the qualification for men’s cricket event?

Five of the six teams will be decided on the basis of ICC Men’s T20I Ranking. One highest-ranked team each from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania as of 31 December 2026 will qualify directly for the LA28 Olympics. Host America (USA) can also qualify, but for this it will have to finish in the top-15 in the ICC Men’s T20I Rankings any time between 30 June 2026 and 31 December 2026. If the USA fails to make the top-15, its automatic spot will go to the highest-ranked team from that continent that has not already qualified by December 31, 2026.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah described the return of cricket to the Olympics as a major milestone in the history of the game. Jay Shah says that the return of cricket to the Olympics is a historic moment for our sport. This is a great opportunity to bring cricket to players and fans around the world. The new qualification system gives all member countries a clear path to the Olympics.

ICC Chief Executive Officer Sanjog Gupta said the new qualification model strikes a balance between competition and global representation. Sanjog says that ‘This system has been designed with the aim of giving representation to different regions of the world while maintaining the level of competition. The new Olympic qualifier will make this journey more exciting.
