Ladakh gets separate identity in Aadhar card, major change in records after seven years, read news
Residents of Ladakh have now started getting their correct identity in Aadhaar card. In fact, after a wait of almost seven years, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has started registering Ladakh as a separate entity from Jammu and Kashmir in the Aadhaar records. Now in the state column of Aadhaar card, instead of Jammu and Kashmir, ‘Ladakh’ will be written directly.
In fact, after the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2019, Ladakh got the status of a separate union territory. Despite this, for many years only Jammu and Kashmir was recorded as the state in the Aadhaar records. Due to this, the people of Ladakh had to face difficulty in availing many government and private services, because the information recorded in the documents did not match the new administrative system.
The demand was rising for a long time
There was a demand regarding this problem for a long time. Later, taking the matter seriously, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena intervened. On his instructions the administration took up the issue with UIDAI and the process of making necessary corrections in the Aadhaar records was initiated. Now UIDAI has started making changes in the records and registering Ladakh with a separate regional identity. This will make it easier for residents to open bank accounts, avail benefits of government schemes and use other identity-based services.
The administration has also prepared a new system to implement this change. Aadhaar records have been updated based on specific pin codes of Ladakh, which are verified with the Department of Posts. This information was then sent to UIDAI, so that a large number of records could be updated simultaneously.
You can download updated e-Aadhaar now
The biggest advantage of this process was that people did not need to visit different Aadhaar centers to change the name of the state in their Aadhaar. Now residents can download their updated e-Aadhaar from the official website of UIDAI and if they wish, they can also order PVC Aadhaar card online.
The administration believes that this step is not only a technical improvement but also an important initiative towards officially recognizing the identity of the people of Ladakh. This will clearly reflect the distinct identity of Ladakh in government records and will remove many obstacles faced by citizens in accessing services.
