Equation of tub and soil

The first condition of land lotus cultivation is the selection of the right pot. This plant thrives in very small tubs. So choose a tub with a diameter of at least 10-12 inches. Remember, water should not accumulate under the feet of the plant. So it is mandatory to have drainage system or holes under the tub. The soil mixture should be loose. Mix 40 percent garden soil with 30 percent cow dung or vermicompost and 30 percent sand. The plant roots will get oxygen easily.

The love of the sun and the measure of water

Lotus loves the sun. If you get at least 5-6 hours of strong sun a day, the growth of the plant is worth seeing. However, if it is very hot in the afternoon, you can keep it a little hidden. It is important to maintain ‘balance’ in watering. Water only when the soil is completely dry. Excess water can rot the roots. There is fear of waterlogging during monsoons, so keep a close eye on it.

Food and trimming

Provide regular organic fertilizer to strengthen the plant. It is best to use liquid fertilizer once a month. A little phosphorus-rich fertilizer during the flowering season helps in budding. But remember, too much fertilizer can be counterproductive. Lightly prune the tree once a year. It will grow new stems and increase the number of flowers. An occasional spray of neem oil will keep insects at bay.
