The increasing number of women in the country has exposed the lack of gender balance both at home and at the workplace. Latvian women now rely on platforms that provide them with male craftsmen on a timely basis.
Shortage of men and service of husband for hire
There are 15% fewer men than women in Latvia, which is three times higher than the EU average. This is the reason why women are resorting to ‘hired husbands’ and handyman services for household work. According to a New York Post report, women are hiring men for minor household chores, repairs, plumbing and maintenance.
Major Platform: ‘Man with Golden Hand’
Services like ‘Man with Golden Hands’ provide laborers to women for household work. Additionally, there are platforms like ‘Husband for an Hour’ that provide men for painting, mending curtains and other home maintenance work on an hourly basis.
Women’s reaction and challenges of life
A woman named Dania told that almost all of her festivals team are women. “Working with women is fun, but social interactions would be even better if there was gender balance in the workplace,” she said. Her friend Jane says that due to shortage of men, many women are trying to find partners by traveling abroad.
Number of women above 65 years doubled
According to the World Atlas, among people aged 65 and older in Latvia, the number of women is twice that of men. This gap is further increasing the lack of men in domestic work and social life. This trend is not limited to Latvia only. In the UK, Laura Young started renting out her husband James in 2022 under ‘Rent My Handy Husband’, which charges hourly fees for household tasks.
