The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a next-generation AI-based digital security framework to prevent the identity of over one billion Indians from being compromised. The initiative, called Invisible Shield, improves the accuracy of fingerprint, face and iris verification during Aadhaar enrollment and updates it to prevent the generation of fake IDs. Launched by UIDAI to strengthen India’s digital security framework, the system is AI-enabled, using accelerated computing to perform millions of calculations in an instant, according to the Ministry of Electronics and IT.

This multi-layered system securing the Aadhaar ecosystem acts as an invisible shield to ensure citizen trust and data integrity. Each new Aadhaar enrollment is matched with the entire enrolled Aadhaar database to ensure uniqueness. To further strengthen this security framework, UIDAI, in collaboration with the Hyderabad-based International Institute of Information Technology, has indigenously developed advanced AI models for all biometric modalities such as fingerprints, face and iris scans. To prevent fraudulent registrations, these AI-based models run on Nvidia DGX’s high-performance inference infrastructure, enabling secure computation and matching of population-level data. Each deduplication attempt involves billions of calculations. Advanced duplication removal has already been completed for several states using UIDAI’s latest AI inference techniques.
Help prevent fraud
UIDAI is using AI-based document metadata extraction and verification against authentic sources to prevent registration fraud. This infrastructure uses DigiLocker’s application programming interface for document verification. This will help prevent fraud. The new initiative will help ensure document authenticity, reduce registration and update times and improve service quality.
