Lebanon-Israel face to face after 33 years, important talks held in Washington; Looking forward to more meetings
New Delhi: Amid rising tensions in West Asia, Lebanon and Israel have started direct talks after more than three decades. This meeting held on Tuesday in Washington is being considered an important diplomatic initiative, in which both sides described the dialogue as positive, although consensus has not yet been reached on many important issues.
This conversation has taken place at a time when there is tension in the entire Gulf region. The trilateral meeting, hosted by the United States, is being seen as the first high-level dialogue since 1993, strengthening the prospects for further dialogue in the future.
High-level talks after 33 years
In this meeting held in Washington, representatives of Lebanon and Israel sat face to face and discussed after many years. Both sides described the exchange of views as constructive, but some major differences still remain.
Lebanon raised the issue of humanitarian crisis
Lebanon’s Ambassador to the US, Nada Hamadeh Mouawad, described the talks as positive and said that information about the next round of talks will be shared when the time comes. He stressed the need to immediately address the humanitarian crisis caused by the current conflict.
After the talks, Moawad said, "I called for a ceasefire and the return of displaced people to their homes. I also called for practical measures to be taken to alleviate the serious humanitarian crisis resulting from the ongoing conflict in Lebanon,"CNN quoted him as saying.
Lebanon’s stance on sovereignty and security
Moawad also clarified that he "Reaffirms the urgent need for full implementation of the November 2024 Cessation of Hostilities Declaration". He also thanked America for making the talks possible.
During the meeting, Lebanon reiterated its demand for a ceasefire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, which is said to be the main priority of the talks.
Israel’s focus: security paramount
On behalf of Israel, Ambassador Yechiel Leiter discussed this matter. "Two hours of great exchange" told. However, he did not give any direct answer on the issue of ceasefire in southern Lebanon.
Leiter said, "As far as the ceasefire is concerned, we are dealing with only one thing, and I have made it very clear, we are focused on the safety of the residents of the State of Israel."
Ongoing talks amid regional tension
This talk is taking place at a time when tension is at its peak in the entire region. This dialogue has started after the delicate ceasefire agreement between America, Israel and Iran a week ago.
According to reports, Israel may focus on the disarmament of Hezbollah and a possible peace deal with Lebanon in this process.
