Lebanon's Parliament elected military commander Joseph Aoun as President, the post was vacant for two years
Beirut: Lebanon's parliament on Thursday elected military commander Joseph Aoun as president. Voted to elect Joseph Aoun as head of state. This cleared the way for his appointment to the post that had been vacant for two years. The session was the legislature's 13th attempt to elect a successor to former President Michel Aoun. Whose tenure ended in October 2022.
Michel Aoun is no relation to military commander Joseph. The vote comes just weeks after a shaky ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah ended 14 months of conflict. As Lebanon's leaders seek international aid for reconstruction.

Aoun was widely considered the preferred candidate of the US and Saudi Arabia. Whose assistance Lebanon will need to ensure that Israel withdraws its forces from southern Lebanon in accordance with the agreement and to raise funds for post-war reconstruction.
