Savarkar defamation case: Pune court grants bail to Rahul Gandhi

Pune: A special court on Friday (January 10) granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case filed against him for alleged objectionable remarks made by him on Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

The MP/MLA court in Pune granted Gandhi, who is a Member of Parliament (MP) from Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh and the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, on a surety bond of Rs 25,000 after he appeared before the court through video conferencing.

Senior Congress leader Mohan Joshi stood as surety before the court.

Court granted permanent exemption to Gandhi from appearing before it

Advocate Milind Pawar, who represented the Congress leader before the court, said that the court also granted permanent exemption to the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha from appearing before it, news agency PTI reported.

Pawar also said that the matter will be now heard on February 18.

Grandnephew of Savarkar filed complaint against Gandhi

The defamation case was filed on a complaint of Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Savarkar, after Gandhi’s speech in London in March 2023, where he allegedly made certain remarks on Savarkar.
