New Delhi: In a shocking loss for Indian television, Anand Sagar Chopra, son of Ramayan creator Ramanand Sagar, has passed away in Mumbai.
The co-producer of the iconic 1987 series leaves behind a legacy of warmth and family values. Last rites were held today, drawing tributes from fans mourning the end of an era in showbiz.
Family’s heartbreaking announcement
The Sagar family shared a moving statement on Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra’s death on February 13, 2026. “It is with deep sorrow and profound grief, Sagar family announces the sad demise of their beloved father, Shri Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra, who passed away peacefully today, 13th February 2026,” the official note read.
They described him as a key figure in the second generation of Sagar Arts. “Son of legendary Ramanand Sagar, creator of the original 1987 TV series Ramayan, Anand ji was part of the second generation managing Sagar Arts. A man of warmth, dignity, and values, Shri Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra touched many lives with his kindness, wisdom, and gentle spirit. He will be fondly remembered by family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him,” the statement added.

The family confirmed the last rites took place on Friday, February 13, 2026, at 4:30 PM. The ceremony was held at Hindu Smashan Bhumi (Pavan Hans) in Mumbai, as per the announcement. This quick farewell reflected the family’s wish for a dignified send-off amid grief.
Legacy in television and film
Anand Sagar Chopra co-produced the legendary Ramayana series (1987-1988), directed by his father Ramanand Sagar. The show starred Arun Govil as Lord Ram, Dipika Chikhlia as Sita, Sunil Lahri as Lakshman, Arvind Trivedi as Ravana, and Dara Singh as Hanuman. It drew from Valmiki’s ancient text and Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, captivating millions.
Under Sagar Arts, the family banner also made hit Hindi films like Geet (1970), Lalkaar (1972), Charas (1976), Prem Bandhan (1979), Baghavat (1982)and later ones such as 1971 (2007) and Mitwaa (2015). Anand’s role helped keep the production house thriving across TV and cinema.

Shiv Sagar, nephew ot Anand Sagar, paid his condolences. He said, ”Anand ji was a legend, a wonderful actor, director, adept producer and a master set designer. His contribution to the legacy of Sagar Arts was monumental. When I was doing my first show, Mahima Shani Dev in 2008, he was my mentor and introduced me to the world of filmmaking. I admire his willpower and his spirituality, which I experienced firsthand.”
