Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami to Host New York City FC in 2025 Season Opener | Read

Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami is set to host New York City FC in the opening match of the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.

Last season, Messi led Inter Miami to achieve the best record in MLS, though the team faced an upset against Atlanta in the playoffs’ first round.

Miami will kick off the season at home on February 22 against NYCFC, which falls between their CONCACAF Champions Cup matches against Kansas City on February 18 and 25. Messi and his team will compete against their Eastern Conference rivals and will also face San Jose, Houston, and Minnesota from the Western Conference.

On August 16, Inter Miami will host Western Conference rivals Dallas, Seattle, and the defending MLS champion, Los Angeles Galaxy. The Galaxy will begin their 2025 season at home against the league’s newest expansion team, San Diego, on February 23. San Diego’s entry into the league marks the launch of the 30th MLS club in its 30th season, during which each team will play 34 matches, evenly divided between home and away games.

The league will honour its inaugural 1996 season with a match on April 6, when DC United visits San Jose, a rematch of the first-ever MLS game. United will also travel to face the Galaxy on July 12, revisiting the first MLS Cup final matchup. The 2025 MLS All-Star Game is scheduled for July 23 in Austin.

MLS will take a break from June 15-24 for the FIFA Club World Cup and the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, both taking place in U.S. venues. Inter Miami and the Seattle Sounders will represent MLS in the Club World Cup. Additionally, the 2025 Leagues Cup, featuring teams from MLS and Mexico’s LIGA MX, will run from July 29 to August 31.
