New Delhi Legendary footballer Lionel Messi’s Kolkata tour, for which fans were waiting for a long time, ended in just 22 minutes and there was an atmosphere of chaos inside the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday, Messi, who was on his second visit to the city as part of his GOAT Tour, was expected to make it a memorable day for football in India, But exactly the opposite happened,
There was tremendous excitement among the fans about the arrival of FIFA World Cup winner Messi. A large number of fans had reached the stadium early on Saturday to see him. But by afternoon the entire event fell apart. Now let us know how this chaos happened.
More than 50 thousand fans arrived
Around 50,000 spectators had gathered at the Salt Lake Stadium, many of whom had purchased tickets worth more than Rs 4,000. They helplessly watched the scene where this great football player was surrounded by politicians, VVIP people, heavy security arrangements and a crowd of people who were more interested in taking selfies.
The stadium gates were opened at 8 am and Messi took the field at 11:30 am along with his Inter Miami teammates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul. As soon as he entered, he was welcomed by the deafening applause of thousands of fans.
surrounded only by VIP people
According to sources, within minutes Messi found himself surrounded by politicians, police officers, VIPs and their convoys, forming a human cordon. The spectators were not able to even get a glimpse of the player whom they had come to see.
Surprised and smiling slightly, Messi tried to take a slow tour of the field and gave autographs to some former players, but the chaos continued to increase.
Through the public address system, promoter Satadru Dutta repeatedly appealed to the crowd to step back. In a tense voice he said, “Please leave them alone. Please clear the field.”
However, his appeals were largely ignored. Ultimately, much before his scheduled one-hour program, he was taken out of the stadium due to security reasons and a decision was taken to cancel the event. After this the situation worsened further. The stadium was vandalized, decorations and property were damaged and the entire complex was left in disarray.
Ganguly wanted Messi to stay longer
According to a report, Sourav Ganguly, who was among the chief guests of this program, tried to convince Messi to stay longer. After the event was cancelled, the organisers, West Bengal Sports Minister Arup Biswas and state police DGP Rajiv Kumar were seen talking to Messi’s team and trying to convince them to continue with the event.
Meanwhile, Ganguly was heard saying, “It would be better if you wait a little longer.”
Now Messi has left for Hyderabad on Saturday itself, where he will participate in a brief football session (kickabout) with Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.
