Over the past 19 years, the league has set many records that still seem impossible to break. One such record is the record of hitting most sixes in a single season.
Former West Indies batsman Chris Gayle holds the record for hitting most sixes in a single IPL season, he made this record while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2012. This record still stands, and Andre Russell came close to breaking it in 2019 but failed to do so. You will be surprised to know that Gayle’s name has appeared thrice in the top 5 list of players who have hit most sixes in the IPL season, while no Indian is included in it.
Chris Gayle (59)
Chris Gayle holds the record for hitting most sixes in a single IPL season. This West Indian player had made this record by hitting a total of 59 sixes while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2012. This record remains unbroken even today. Gayle scored 733 runs in 15 matches that season, which included one century and seven half-centuries.
Andre Russell (52)
Andre Russell of West Indies came close to breaking Chris Gayle’s record, but failed. Russell is second in the list of players who have hit most number of sixes in a single IPL season. Russell hit a total of 52 sixes while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2019.
Chris Gayle (51)
Third in this list is Chris Gayle, who hit a total of 51 sixes while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013. That season, he also made a record of hitting 17 sixes in a single match, which remains an unbroken record. This inning, in which he scored a total of 175 runs, is the highest individual inning in IPL history.
Jos Buttler (45)
English player Jos Buttler is in fourth position. Buttler hit a total of 45 sixes while playing for Rajasthan Royals in 2022. 35-year-old Buttler played for Rajasthan from 2018 to 2024 and is playing for Gujarat Titans from 2025.
Chris Gayle (44)
Chris Gayle has been included in the list of top five players hitting most sixes in a single IPL season thrice. The fifth position in this list is from 2011, when Gayle hit a total of 44 sixes. He also played for RCB in that season.
