The fire of Lohri is considered very sacred. The tradition of lighting fire on Lohri has been going on for centuries. On Lohri, everyone gathers at an empty place in the evening and a fire is lit. After lighting the fire, everyone gathers around the fire and revolves around it and prays for happiness, prosperity and good fortune. But do you know why it is burnt on Lohri?

Actually, the tradition of lighting fire on Lohri is associated with Mata Sati. According to mythological and religious legend, once Sati's father King Daksh performed the ritual of Mahayagya. He invited all the gods in this yagya. But Shivji and Sati were not called. When Mother Sati came to know about the Yagya being held at her father's house, she became anxious to go there and started insisting on Lord Shiva to go there. Sati did not agree even after many refusals from Lord Shiva and finally she reached the Mahayagya. But except the mother, the behavior of everyone there seemed like revenge to Sati. Father Daksh condemned Shiva very much in front of everyone, due to which Sati got hurt and sacrificed her body in the fire of Yagya. Therefore, the fire of Lohri is considered a symbol of sacrifice and dedication of Mother Sati. The fire lit on Lohri is dedicated to Mother Sati.
