Story of Lohri and Dulla Bhatti
The story of Dulla Bhatti regarding Lohri is very popular. According to the popular story, during the time of Mughal emperor Akbar, there lived a robber named Dulla Bhatti in Punjab. Dulla Bhatti used to loot the wealth from the rich and distribute it among the poor. Apart from this, during the Mughal period, there was a campaign in which the landlords and rulers had an evil eye on the poor girls and they used to abduct these girls and make them their slaves. Then they used to employ them as maids. Dulla Bhatti used to find boys for girls and get them married. Once there were two sisters who were very beautiful. The names of these two sisters were Sundari and Mundari. Once a landlord kidnapped those two sisters and took them with him.
When Dulla Bhatti came to know about this, he freed both the sisters from the clutches of the landlord, found husbands for them, collected wood in the forest, brought a fire and got the marriage of both the sisters done by donating them as brides. After this, Dulla Bhatti was given the title of a hero in the whole of Punjab. For this reason, Sunder Mundriyaye is sung in folk songs along with Dulla Bhatti.
