New Delhi: Lok Sabha on Thursday approved the proposal to extend the tenure of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and present its report at the end of the 2025 budget session. JPC President Jagdambika Pal said that during the committee meeting on Wednesday, it was decided that there are about 6 states where there are disputes between the state government and the Waqf Board regarding the ownership of properties and in view of those disputes, JPC It has been decided to get an extension. Jagadambika Pal told news agency ANI, “The Speaker had given the order on the JPC, but in the meeting held yesterday it was said that since there are some properties in 6 states where the state There is a dispute between the government and the Waqf Board, the board is claiming some properties as its own. We had sought a reply from them, but we did not get any reply from them.” He said, “Now we have decided to present our findings on the last day of the 2025 budget session.
The previous government had also decided to hand over the government properties to the Waqf Board, but that decision was stayed by the court. In the 1970s, the Waqf Board claimed that these properties were acquired by the British by paying compensation in 1911. Then in the 1970s the Waqf Board claimed that 123 such properties belonged to them, then these problems arose when the previous (UPA) government Formed a cabinet just before the elections were announced and said that they would hand over properties at the rate of Re 1 per acre per year. However, the court had stayed that decision, otherwise government property worth about Rs 1 lakh crore would have gone to Waqf. Therefore, we decided that it would be better to extend the deadline. Opposition is complaining unnecessarily. Earlier, Jagdambika Pal also said that the opposition is unnecessarily complaining about there being too much work in the committee.
He said, “People should also understand that long meetings are being held again and again. More than 125 hours of meetings have taken place. We have met government officials from Telangana, Odisha, Assam, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Waqf Board, Minority Commission. So they are complaining to the Speaker about the constant meetings and working on the committee, they are complaining about the work that I call them 3 times a week, there are meetings 8 hours a day.” 'We are listening to everyone' Criticizing the opposition, he said, “We have been given an important mandate, we are listening to everyone. Earlier I used to see complaints about work not being completed, but this is the first time I have heard from the opposition that they are complaining about too much work, so we have given them a lot of chances, we listen to them only for 8 hours .” The Waqf Bill is now expected to be introduced in the last week of the 2025 budget session.
