Lok Sabha rejects no-confidence motion against Om Birla by voice vote, Speaker retained

Tezzbuzz Desk – The no-confidence motion moved by the opposition against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was rejected by voice vote. The motion was debated for two days, in which Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the Speaker and strongly refuted the opposition allegations. After the rejection of the proposal, Om Birla will now remain the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Opposition accused the speaker of bias

The no-confidence motion was moved by Congress MP Mohammad Javed with the support of several opposition colleagues. The opposition alleged that the Speaker was showing favoritism towards the opposition leaders and they were not being given equal opportunities. RJD MP Abhay Kumar Sinha said that opposition MPs often felt that their freedom of speech was in danger.

Sinha also raised questions on the action of the House, saying, “This House also saw that dark day when more than 140 MPs were suspended in one day. Real democracy is one in which even the weakest person can raise his voice.”

Amit Shah supported the speaker

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in the debate that the job of the Speaker is to represent both the sides as per the rules and procedures of the House. He said that the Speaker is the neutral custodian of the House and his work is based on history and rules.

Shah also hit out at the opposition, saying debate and disagreement should be respected in the House, but leveling allegations and taking political advantage is inappropriate.

Opposition also raised questions on obstructions and camera focus

JMM MP Vijay Kumar Hansdak said that often there are interruptions in the speeches of the opposition and their speaking is not paid attention to. NCP MP Bajrang Manohar Sonawane said the objective of the resolution was not to win voting but to highlight democratic rights.

Giving an example, Sonawane said, “Just like a table fan provides cooling to only one side, similarly sometimes the attention of a chair remains focused on only one side.”
