Lok Sabha to discuss motion seeking removal of Speaker Om Birla on Monday
New Delhi: The Lok Sabha will take up a motion seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla on Monday. The notice for the motion came from opposition members and appears on the agenda of the House for the day.
According to the Lok Sabha agenda, the motion proposes the removal of Om Birla from the post of Speaker. Opposition MPs submitted the notice under parliamentary rules that allow members to move a resolution seeking the Speaker’s removal.
Motion moved by opposition members
The motion has been moved by Dr Mohammed Javed, K Suresh and Dr Mallu Ravi. The opposition leaders submitted the notice to raise concerns about the conduct of the Speaker during the recent parliamentary session. The Lok Sabha agenda lists the proposal for discussion on Monday. Apart from routine business, the House has scheduled this motion as the main item for the day.
Allegations mentioned in the proposal
In the motion, the opposition has made several allegations about the Speaker’s conduct in the House. The proposal says the Speaker made undesirable remarks against women MPs. It also claims that opposition MPs faced suspension for the entire session while ruling party MPs did not face action for objectionable behaviour. The motion further accuses the Speaker of supporting the ruling side during debates on controversial issues.
Agenda for Monday’s sitting
The Lok Sabha Secretariat released the agenda for Monday’s sitting. According to the schedule, the government has not listed any legislative business for the day. The House will first take up routine matters before discussing the motion related to the Speaker. Members will also pay tribute to Dr Ricky Andrew J Syngkon, who passed away recently. The discussion on the motion will take place after these proceedings.
