Lord Ram was a Muslim…Mamata Banerjee’s MLA makes big claim, BJP enraged
Kolkata : The politics of West Bengal has once again become heated due to religious rhetoric. The remarks made by senior MLA Madan Mitra of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s party Trinamool Congress (TMC) about Lord Ram have created a big controversy. A video clip of his speech is becoming increasingly viral on social media, in which he is seen claiming that Lord Ram was a Muslim. As soon as this statement came to light, the Bharatiya Janata Party gave a sharp reaction and called it an open insult to Hindu sentiments.
Speech went viral on social media
In the clip going viral, Madan Mitra can be seen giving a speech in Bengali language. He began his speech by reciting a Hindu verse, but then attacked the BJP’s interpretation of Hinduism. Mitra claimed that the purpose of his comments was not to target any religion, but to question the BJP leadership’s understanding of Hinduism. However, his words gave rise to sharp reactions at both political and religious levels.
BJP angry over Madan Mitra’s statement
BJP is furious over Madan Mitra’s statement. West Bengal BJP, while sharing the video on social media platform ‘X’, called it an insult to the faith of Hindu society. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari strongly condemned this comment and said that such statement regarding Lord Shri Ram has been made deliberately to hurt Hindu faith. Terming it as “ideological decline” of TMC, he alleged that the party is continuously attacking Hindu sentiments.
Claim to raise questions on BJP leaders
Madan Mitra also mentioned an alleged personal experience in his statement. He claimed that once in Delhi he had challenged a senior BJP leader to prove that Lord Ram is a Hindu. According to Mitra, he had asked what was Ram’s surname, but none of the BJP leaders present there, including Suvendu Adhikari, could answer it. This claim deepened the controversy.
,@AitcOfficial leaders cannot help but insult Hindu Gods and Hindu beliefs it seems. Now TMC MLA Madan Mitra says Lord Ram was a Muslim, Not Hindu.

Reference to conversation with a monk
Madan Mitra further said that later a Hindu monk had told him that the surname of Lord Ram was ‘Ram Jethmalani’. He presented this statement as a jibe at the religious understanding of the BJP and raised the question whether any Hindu would believe such things. Sharp reactions are being seen on social media regarding his statement.
Madan Mitra is not afraid of political consequences
Despite the growing controversy, Madan Mitra seemed adamant on his statement. He said that he is not afraid of any political consequences and BJP can do whatever it wants against him. He openly said that he challenges him to spread his statement across the country and wants to see what action BJP takes against him.
Increasing polarization and political influence
This entire controversy has further intensified the religious polarization in the politics of West Bengal. While BJP is adopting an aggressive stance by calling it an attack on Hindu faith, uneasiness is being seen within TMC regarding this statement as well. Everyone’s eyes are fixed on how much impact this issue will have on electoral politics in the coming days.
