Loss is causing last minute changes, Congress repeating the same mistake in Punjab, UP?
In the coming time, there are elections in states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Punjab. The Congress party has been out of power in Gujarat and Uttarakhand for several decades. At the same time, she is looking for a comeback in Uttarakhand and Punjab. These four states are challenging for the Congress, but at the last moment, the Congress seems to be making some changes which may prove costly for it. In 2022, Congress had made last-minute changes in Punjab and these changes were costly for it. Apart from this, Congress did not make any changes at the last moment in Kerala and it won. Despite this, it seems that Congress will remain in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab only after making changes in its organization.
A series of meetings have been going on regarding Punjab for the last several days. There is discussion that the current Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Vading can be removed and this responsibility can be given to some other leader. This change is being discussed at a time when Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal is repeatedly saying that elections can be held two-three months earlier. If this happens then the new president will get only 4-5 months time. Even if elections are held on time, the new president may have less than a year to serve.
Will Congress get trapped by making changes in UP?
Anivash Pandey was made in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Congress, a few months after Congress’s election defeat in 2022. Ajay Rai became the President of Uttar Pradesh Congress after the 2022 assembly elections. Now, just before the elections, Congress has made former Delhi MLA Rajendra Pal Gautam in charge in place of Avinash Pandey. At the same time, there is discussion that a new president can also be made in place of Ajay Rai. Due to the removal of these leaders, who had been coordinating with the coalition partners for a long time, in the election year, a situation of confusion has arisen. Interestingly, the same Rajendra Gautam has been made in-charge who had suddenly reached Mayawati’s house a few days ago and was issued a notice to him by the Congress.

Now even if a new president is made, Congress may get stuck in its strategy. Already the situation between Congress and Samajwadi Party is not easy. Leaders like Imran Masood are already talking about 100 to 170 seats and as soon as Rajendra Gautam comes, he has made the matter of alliance more complicated by talking about half the seats. On the other hand, Akhilesh Yadav is still repeating again and again that his alliance is with Congress and both will contest the elections together. However, there does not seem to be a comfortable situation between the two parties. The reason for this is that SP is ready to give maximum 60 seats but Congress leaders are starting with 100.
Now in this situation, entry of new president, new in-charge and new team can complicate the matter further. Interestingly, Rajendra Gautam has been inclined towards Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) instead of Samajwadi Party since the beginning. This is giving further fuel to those discussions that Congress is again taking double opinion. Some of its leaders want to contest elections with SP, while some leaders are also trying to form a new alliance with BSP and other small parties.

Overall, the situation of Congress seems to be like that of Bihar. Similarly, in Bihar too, Congress had changed its in-charge and state president at the last moment and it had to suffer the consequences of this in the elections. Akhilesh Prasad Singh, who was then removed from the post of Bihar Congress President, is now openly saying that if he had remained the President, the situation of Congress in Bihar would not have been so bad. Akhilesh Prasad was also a leader who worked closely with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), whereas as soon as Krishna Alavaru was made in-charge, a dispute started between Congress and RJD and the equation of seats was not resolved till the end.
Will Congress keep fighting amongst itself in Punjab?
More or less similar situation is visible in Punjab. After the crushing defeat in the 2022 elections, Congress made Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding the state president. Congress benefited under his leadership in the Lok Sabha elections and was successful in winning 7 seats. Now there is discussion that they can also be changed at the last moment. All this is happening when Aam Aadmi Party is in election mode and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also become fully active by appointing a new president. At the same time, the tussle is still going on in the Congress whether Raja Vading should be removed or not.

The result is that instead of making its own preparations, the Congress cadre is keeping its eyes focused on this. On the contrary, its main opposition parties are busy sharpening their respective election campaigns.
In this matter, Congress needs to learn from its states like Kerala. The leader of opposition in Kerala was VD Satheesan, Sunny Joseph was made the president about a year before the elections and at last the party was completely united. She got the result and she won the election and came to power after 10 years. On the contrary, in Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Assam, Congress finally made changes and these changes cost it dearly.
